در ادامه جدولی را مشاهده می‌کنید که اسم‌ها و ضمایر نامعینی را نشان می‌دهد که بعد از آنها فعل باید یا فقط بصورت مفرد، بصورت مفرد یا جمع و یا فقط بصورت جمع آورده شود.

نکته: در جملاتی که در آنها either …. Or و neither ….. nor وجود دارد، مفرد یا جمع بودن فعل با توجه به فاعلی که به آن نزدیک تر است تعیین می‌شود.
Neither Mary nor her brothers are going to come tonight.
Neither Mary’s brothers nor Mary is going to come tonight.
Either the sofa or the chairs have been sold.
نکته: با عبارت kind of از فعل مفرد استفاده کنید و با عبارت kinds of از فعل جمع استفاده کنید (همچنین برای عبارت‌های true of، sort of، و type of). عبارت kind of به موارد مفرد اشاره دارد در حالی که عبارت kinds of به موارد جمع اشاره دارد. اگرچه گاهی هر دوی آنها با اسامی غیرقابل شمارش بکار برده می‌شوند.

نکته: بعضی از اسم‌های جمع ممکن است بصورت مجموعه اسم‌های مفرد در نظر گرفته شوند، بنابراین فعل آنها مفرد است. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید.
Three chapters a night was required reading in Sue’s class.
Five hundred miles is a long distance to drive in one day.
One of the maps is missing. Two are on the wall. The first (one) belongs to a student and the second belongs to the teacher.
نکته: تطابق بین فعل و فاعل در بعضی از موارد استفاده خاص از one می‌تواند کمی گیج کننده باشد. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید.
One of those men likes to drive fast.
He is the only one of those men who likes to drive fast.
He is one of those men who like to drive fast.
توجه داشته باشید که اغلب فعل از فاعل در جمله جدا است و میان آنها کلمات زیادی ممکن است قرار گیرند، دقت کنید که حتما فعل اصلی جمله با فاعل اصلی جمله تطابق داشته باشد. دقت کنید که فعل در عبارت مستقل با فاعل عبارت مستقل تطابق داشته باشد. به مثال‌های زیر توجه کنید.
The cost of renting apartment in some cities in the United States is considerably higher than many have expected it to be.
In each of the departments, the buyer, who consults with the clerks to check on shortages, decides how much to order.
